The basics

The dairy group includes milk, yogurt, cheese, and lactose-free milk, plus calcium-fortified soy beverages, and is a leading source of calcium for building and maintaining strong bones. Products made from milk that keep little or no calcium — such as butter, cream, and cream cheese — are not counted in the group. MyPlate recommends about 3 cup-equivalents of dairy a day for most adults and suggests choosing fat-free (skim) or low-fat options to get the nutrients with less saturated fat. People who are lactose intolerant can still meet their calcium needs through lactose-free milk, fortified soy beverages, or naturally lower-lactose hard cheeses.
