Fifteen hidden words in a 13×13 grid: the five food groups plus two foods each, across, down, and diagonal. Word list grouped by group; solved grid included.
1. Ask for the group, not just the word
When a student finds CHICKEN, ask which heading it sits under on the word list. The puzzle is the hook; the grouped list is the lesson.
2. Forward only, by design
Words run right, down, or diagonally down-right, never backwards, so second graders can finish without frustration. Tell the class the three directions up front.
3. A fast-finisher station that teaches
Keep a stack by the door. Early finishers of the sort or matching sheet pick one up, and the ten foods are drawn from the same groups they just practiced.
4. Extend it with two more words
Have students add one food from each group to the bottom of the list, not to the grid, just the list, and say which group it joins.
