Which Food Group? Worksheet
Fifteen foods, five groups to circle for each, including the ones classes argue about: potato, popcorn, tofu, fortified soy milk. Answer key included, free to copy.
1. Three per group is the check
Every group gets circled exactly three times. A student with four dairy foods and two grains can find the slip without the key. Have them re-argue the extra one before you step in.
2. Let the tricky ones be the lesson
Potato, popcorn, tofu, and fortified soy milk are on the sheet on purpose. Each has a one-line why: a potato is a starchy vegetable, popcorn is a whole grain, tofu is made from soybeans, fortified soy milk delivers the calcium dairy is counted for, and the food groups guide has the rest.
3. Grade by column
With the key open, a whole class set grades in minutes: fifteen circles per sheet, the same fifteen every time.
4. Then flip it
Cover the food names and read out only the circled groups. Students name a food of their own for each. Same sheet, reversed retrieval.
Food-group assignments follow USDA MyPlate guidance and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 (potatoes are starchy vegetables; popcorn is a whole grain; tofu is a protein food; fortified soy milk counts as dairy).
