The basics

The vegetable group includes all fresh, frozen, canned, and dried vegetables, plus 100% vegetable juice, and supplies vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. MyPlate sorts vegetables into five subgroups — dark-green; red and orange; beans, peas, and lentils; starchy; and other vegetables — and encourages eating a variety of colors across the week to get a broader range of nutrients. Together with fruit, vegetables should fill about half your plate at meals, and both raw and cooked vegetables count toward your daily total.
