1. Calculate first, then fill in
Each student opens the MyPlate Plan calculator, enters their age, sex, height, weight and activity level, and copies the amount for each food group onto its line.
2. Ask why plans differ
Plans differ from student to student. Ask what changes a plan: age, sex, body size and activity all do. Have students change only their activity level and calculate again to see the amounts move.
3. Plan a day of meals
With the amounts filled in, students plan one day of meals and snacks that adds up to them, one food group at a time.
4. Teach the units
Cups and ounce-equivalents are the plan's units. One slice of bread is 1 ounce-equivalent of grains, and ¼ cup of cooked beans is 1 ounce-equivalent of protein foods. The serving size guide has the rest.
The calculator's food-group amounts follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025. MyPlate.food is independent and not affiliated with the USDA. Free to print and copy for classroom use.
